The Coal Authority was established by Parliament in 1994 to undertake specific statutory responsibilities associated with: Licensing coal mining operations in Britain Handling subsidence damage claims which are not the responsibility of licensed coalmine operators. Dealing with property and historic liability issues, such as treatment of minewater discharges. Providing public access to information on past and present coal mining operations. Provide a 24 hour call-out service for reported surface hazards. The Coal Authority believes that coal as part of a balanced energy mix, ensuring security of supply, will continue to play an important role in meeting the nation's energy needs for many years to come. With the Government's review of the UK energy policy taking into consideration reducing carbon emissions and maintaining reliable energy supplies, the Authority believes that British mined coal is a strategic national asset and with the technology available can be developed further to meet environmental requirements.
